Vasectomy
Vasectomy is a very effective method of contraception next to abstinence. It has 99.99% effective in preventing pregnancies. Every year, more than 500,000 thousand men in the U.S. choose to have vasectomies. Vasectomy is less expensive and less invasive than tubal ligation where the woman’s tubes are tied.
What is vasectomy?
Vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure where the tube tubes (vas deferens) that carry from the testes are blocked. This blocks the sperm from entering the semen. It is a safe form of birth control for men.
How is it done?
There are two types of vasectomy procedures. A conventional procedure using a scalpel and a non-scalpel procedure.
- Conventional Vasectomy
The conventional vasectomy procedure uses a local anesthetic to numb the scrotum. Then, two small cuts in the skin on each side of the scrotum is done to reach the tubes (vas deferens) that carry the sperm from the testes.
Each tube (vas deferens) is cut, and a small section is removed. The end tubes are sealed using cauterization and a tiny clip.
The cuts are stitched with dissolvable stich.
- No-scalpel vasectomy
The no-scalpel procedure involves numbing the scrotum with a local anesthetic. Then, a tiny puncture hole is done in the skin of the scrotum to reach the tubes. This means, there is no need to cut the skin with a scalpel.
The tubes are closed in the same way as the conventional procedure, either being tied or sealed.
There are no stitches needed as there are no cuts done.
During a vasectomy, the vas tubes are reached through a single, tiny skin opening in the scrotum. Each tube is divided and sealed using cauterization and a tiny clip. This prevents the passage of sperm. You will not notice a change in the amount of semen.
Is vasectomy a painful procedure?
The procedure is pain-free. Vasectomy is performed with local anesthesia.
How long does it take?
The procedure takes about 15 minutes.
Is vasectomy safe?
Vasectomy is a very safe, low-risk procedure, but like any surgery, some complications can occur. The most common reaction is mild bruising.
You can usually return to work within 2 or 3 days. Within a week, most patients can resume exercising and sexual activity.
How effective is vasectomy?
Vasectomy is 99.99% effective. But vasectomy can take up to 3 months to start working. Your semen must be tested to make sure there is no more sperm in it.
Does the sex drive change due to vasectomy?
Most people have no change in sex drive. The procedure does not affect the hormones. So after vasectomy, your sexual function does not change as well as the sensation, erection, and ejaculation. Only the semen being ejaculated does not contain sperm anymore.

Does vasectomy protect you from STIs?
No, it does not protect you against sexually transmitted infections.
Is vasectomy permanent?
Vasectomy is intended to be permanent. You can no longer get a person pregnant. It has is a lifetime decision. If you may want to have children in the future, vasectomy is not a good choice. But if you have decided not to want to have children anymore, vasectomy may be the right option for you.
For many men, having a vasectomy would make sense. Make an appointment to a vasectomy doctor to see if a vasectomy would be right for you.
