What is Peyronie’s disease?

The disease is named after the French physician, François Gigot de la Peyronie, who had the initial description of the disease.  He was a physician and surgeon to King Louis XV.

Peyronie’s disease is a superficial fibrous disorder resulting from fibrous scar tissue that develops on the penis, causing it to have a significant curve and have painful erections. 

It has a negative effect on a patient’s sexual function. This can prevent a patient from having sex or having difficulty attaining an erection or keeping an erection.

It does not go away on its own and the condition may worsen. 

What are the causes of Peyronie’s disease?

While the etiology of Peyronie’s disease is unclear, it is thought to result from an inciting traumatic event followed by aberrant fibrosis or dysregulated wound healing.

The main symptom of Peyronie’s disease is the significant bend of the penis. Here are the following signs and symptoms of a Peyronie’s disease:

Shorter penis
Curved or bent penis
Loss of girth
Lumps in the penis
Painful erection
Soft erection
